If you are like most adult students, you feel stressed out trying to
figure out what you want to do for the rest of your life.

Principal #1, from the Dare to Dream Big audio, is extremely helpful
in putting your worries to ease. Once you figure out your life
purpose, your path gets clearer and you are able to walk
confidently down the path towards the career of your dreams.

Download your own personal life purpose journal to get started.

Use each page to jot down your thoughts on the
following questions, and then use the last page to write out your
life purpose statement.

1. What’s something you do in which time goes by quickly (without
you even checking the time)?

2. If you had all of the money in the world, what would you do?

3. What are your hobbies? What do you like to do for fun? Don’t
just think about now, but also think about when you were a child.

4. What do you like about your hobbies? What is the feeling you get
when you’re engaged in them?

5. Think about a time you felt closest to your core (your true
self). Describe it. What did it feel like? What were you doing?

6. If you had a week to live, how would you spend it?If you take the
time to answer these questions—and you are really honest!—you’ll be
surprised how easy career planning can be. You may “see” the answer
is right in front of you.

Life is what you make it. It all depends on the choices you make each day.
You have this power. Be sure to use it to create the best life for you.

Life is a divine gift from God given to each living being. Within God’s creation and plan, each of us has the ability to use this gift however he or she chooses.

Many philosophers and inspirational gurus have referred to these choices and its relation to life as a blank canvas that each of us can paint however we want. Now, if someone paints a picture he or she does not like, then there is a choice to wipe the canvas clean and start over again, learning from the previous painting you created.

For the benefit of the entire universe, it is important that each of us paints our canvas in the unique manner in which God created each of us. Although each of us are unique, we are all connected in this universe to play out a certain role we’re here to play. If we don’t play the role that lies deep within our hearts, everyone suffers because we will all miss the special gift inside of you that you were meant to share.

Wayne Dyer said, “Don’t die with your music still inside you. Listen to your intuitive inner voice and find what passion stirs your soul.”

My passion is to write. It’s something I’ve done well my entire life. During my junior year of college, I decided I wanted to write for a living. I became a journalist. Although I left the journalism field as a full-time career, I’ve stuck with my passion. I teach writing as a professor. Even now as a life coach, I continue to write all kinds of stuff. I also have a novel in the works.

The point is that life is what you make it. It sounds so cliché, but it’s so true. I always say that the world is my oyster, because for the most part I know I can do absolutely anything I want. It all depends on the choices I make each day. When I make a choice I don’t like, I just make another choice that works better for me.

You have this power, too. Be sure to use it to create the best life for you.

Shift your day by creating a list of all the things you're grateful for.

Yesterday was not one of my better days. It just seemed like one challenge followed another, then another challenge showed up, and then another challenge arrived.

Most of us always know that challenges arrive in our lives for a reason, but we don’t always admit or recognize that when the challenge is upon us. All we seem to focus on is the challenge itself and what’s lacking in our lives.

The next time you have one of those days, try this simple but helpful activity. It raises your spirits and turns your day around.

Take out a piece of paper and jot down all of the things you are truly grateful for in your life. If you don’t appreciate the things you have, you won’t be inviting more positivity in your life. You’ll only continue to generate the challenges that are driving you crazy. So shift your mindset and acknowlege all the great things going on in your life!

If you show me who you associate yourself with, I’ll show you who you are. Believe it or not, your social relationships have a lot of influence in your life, which is why you need to choose your friends carefully.

Like attracts like. What do I mean by that? It’s this simple. If you choose to hang out with people who get into trouble, you’re very likely to get yourself into trouble too. If you choose to hang out with people who are ambitious, then you’re probably an ambitious person too. There’s much to be said for the saying, “birds of a feather flock together.” It’s true.

The qualities that my friends possess are very similar to qualities that I possess – both the qualities I like in my friends and the qualities that I don’t like so much. If you pay attention to your likes and dislikes in your relationships with your friends and family, realize that somewhere within yourself you have that quality as well. That’s why you notice those qualities in others.

Many of my closest friends are driven in their careers. We strive for the very best because that’s what we were taught to do in the environment in which we grew up. We’re adventurous, like to have fun, and expect the best out of life.

While MOST of my friends are like what I described above, I do have some childhood friends who complain alot. It gets under my skin. Sometimes I’ve asked myself, “Sheesh…can’t (so and so) ever be happy about something?” Then I realized something about myself. When I get in a cranky mood, I find myself complaining too. And when I’ve gotten in these moods, I’ve tended to call my complainer friends because I know they’ll jump right into complaint mode with me.

What did I learn from this? I’ve learned that complaining never helps me out when I’m in a difficult situation. And while I never realized I can sometimes get into a complaining mood, it’s never ever helped me get out of a difficult situation. In fact, it’s when I’m able to lift my positivity level up that I’m on top of the world.

Like Albert Einstein said, “You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created.” This statement means a lot of things to me. One of them is if a problem arised out of negativity, I surely can’t fix it from a negative mindframe or out of a complaint.

As a result, I choose to spend most of my time around positive people. They inspire me, and I inspire them.

So be sure, to pick your friends wisely and carefully because they truly do influence you, whether you realize it or not. Remember that none of us are perfect. We are all human beings. Yet, choose friends that embrace not only who you are now but who you strive to be.

New techniques for building a vision board based on Martha Beck's "The Vision Thing," in O Magazine this month.

For those who’ve never heard of a vision board or don’t know what one is, it is the process of cutting out pictures and captions of your deepest desires and goals and then posting them on a board. The idea is that you will attract those goals and desires into your life.

I made my first and only vision board about five years ago, and I must say that most of the goals I planned to accomplish were, in fact, accomplished. Some….not so much. It wasn’t until I read, “The Vision Thing,” by Martha Beck in this month’s issue of O Magazine that I realized there are some new techniques I’d like to try on my next vision board.

First, Beck talks about cutting out images that connect with your inner self. How do you know if it connects with your inner being? Beck says that you’ll know when your body responds to the image. Just like that, I knew exactly what she was talking about. There have been times that I’ve gotten ideas or have seen images and my heart beat a little harder or my stomach got butterflies. And it’s then that I know that I’m REALLY onto something. This is my first pledge to building my next vision board.

My second pledge is to follow Beck’s second piece of advice. She says to not put so much visual attention on the vision board, meaning not to look at it everyday. My last vision board was plastered on my wall. It was the first thing I saw when I woke up every morning. Since my recent relocation to Orlando, Florida, I decided to not unpack my vision board. And that’s what I plan to do with the next vision board I plan to make. Even in The Secret, one man told a story of how he created a vision board, put it away, found it a year or so later, and found that he had accomplished ALL of his goals

So what are you waiting for? As you randomly scroll the pages of magazines, newspapers, pictures, etc., take notice to what your body responds to. Then build your board and put it away. I know I’ll be doing the same.

This is a reflection of essay on following your dreams and taking a close look at where you are and life and where you want to be.

I finally bought the book, The Last Lecture, by Randy Pausch with Jeffrey Zaslow. I’ve heard so much about it for a couple years now, but I never made time to buy it.

So far, I’ve only read the introduction and the first chapter. I’m fully engaged in the book already….so much to the point that my evening plans are to curl up on my couch and dive further in.

As a professor who only had a few months to live due to cancer, Randy Pausch gave his last lecture. A last lecture is common for retiring professors, but this lecture was much different because this was a man in his 50s preparing to die.

Trying to figure out his lecture topic, he decided to right about being able to accomplish his childhood dreams.

It made me reflect on myself. If I died tomorrow, will I have accomplished everything I’ve ever wanted to do? What would my legacy be for the world, for my family, and for my friends? What haven’t I done that I want to do?

Think about it for your own life. If you died tomorrow, are you where you want to be and doing what you want to be doing? If not, why not? Create a “bucket list” for yourself and go after the desires in your heart.

Absolutely nothing is off limits unless you’ve limited yourself. You can always find a million reasons why something can’t be done, but it takes a man or woman with courage to be determined enough to follow through on their dreams. Is that you?
